Mendes goal downs Troyes
Montpellier Hérault SC got the better of ESTAC Troyes to claim a first win since the opening weekend of the campaign.
ESTAC Troyes 0 - 1 Montpellier Hérault SC
The only goal of the game at the Stade de l'Aube came in the 32nd minute when Portuguese centre-back Pedro Mendes rose majestically to meet a corner from the right and head past Mamadou Samassa.
Prior to that, Casimir Ninga had seen an effort disallowed for the visitors while Karim Azamoum struck the woodwork at the other end. Saîf-Eddine Khaoui and Adama Niane were both agonisingly close to drawing level for Troyes in the second half as Montpellier held on and the hosts ended the game with 10 men following the sending-off of Oswaldo Vizcarrondo right at the death.
It was a first win in five for Michel Der Zakarian's Montpellier, who last won on the opening weekend when they edged out SM Caen. Meanwhile, after an encouraging start to life in Ligue 1 Conforama, Troyes have picked up just one point from their last four games.
THE PLAYER: Pedro Mendes
Mendes scored the crucial goal and it was his first since joining Montpellier from Stade Rennais FC in the close season. Indeed, it was a first ever goal in Ligue 1 Conforama for the one-time Real Madrid stopper.
THE STAT: 12
Troyes have not won any of their last 12 top-flight games played in September, drawing four and losing eight since beating OGC Nice 2-0 in September 2006.
