Nancy back in the big time!
After Dijon on Saturday, Nancy became the second Ligue 2 side to clinch promotion to Ligue 1 next season, their 1-0 win over Sochaux on Monday night assuring them of a top-three finish.
After three years in the country's second-tier competition, AS Nancy Lorraine are back in the big time, their win over Sochaux on the synthetic surface of the Stade Marcel-Picot taking them into top spot on the Ligue 2 table, 12 points clear of fourth-placed Havre AC with three matches left to play.
Correa: 'We deserve it'
"It's terrific. And I think it's deserved, given what we've shown over the length of the season," said ASNL's Uruguayan coach Pablo Correa, in his second stint at the club since 2013 after coaching them from 2002 to 2011, with his side looking to clinch the Ligue 2 title before heading on upstairs. "It's the product of a lot of hard work and we deserve the reward, frankly. In all humility, we deserve it. It's the first season we've played with a squad full of lads who want to be there, and not with players disappointed not to be in Ligue 1. To secure promotion, you need a strong Ligue 2 side and that's exactly what we have."
Club president Jacques Rousselot was equally, if not even more, excited.
"It's a feeling of immense joy! It's marvellous. Nancy are headed back where we belong," said the man who has presided over the club since 1994 and who announced that the club will have €30m budget next season, with two or three new players to be signed as early as next week. "We have the fans and our partners behind us, which really makes me crazy with joy. It's the fourth promotion during my time as president, but it's always a special moment. We've been through a lot of tough times in the last three years, but tonight everyone has been rewarded."
