Nene helps PSG up to second
Nene's ninth Ligue 1 goal of the season got the ball rolling for Paris Saint-Germain as they ran out 3-1 home winners over Brest to stand second in the table at the culmination of Week 16.
Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Stade Brestois 29
It was PSG’s third straight home win and Brest’s third away day defeat on the spin. Mathieu Bodmer had already hit the post from a Nene corner (4’) before the Brazilian put the capital club in front a minute later with a delightful volley that left Steeve Elana in the Brest goal helpless.
Brest came into the game with the joint-best defence in the division with 11 conceded, level with Rennes, and reacted well to a rare concession with Nolan Roux bringing the best out of Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Apoula Edel.
Chances were few and far between before the half-time whistle, yet Guillaume Hoarau and Nene could both have extended the home side’s lead.
Roux equalises, Bodmer and Giuly seal deal
Brest came out fighting after the break and equalised in the 54th minute as top scorer Roux volleyed in his fifth of the season.
PSG, now beaten just once in their last 12 in the league, wasted no time in nudging back in front as five minutes later Ludovic Giuly crossed for Bodmer, who managed to net despite being off balance.
Roux tested Edel as former Ligue 1 pacesetters Brest hunted for another equaliser yet PSG were to have the final word as Giuly latched on to a Hoarau knockdown to score in the 77th minute with a diagonal effort. The former Monaco man had headed just wide from a great chance a few minutes previously.
PSG are second, a point behind leaders Lille, while Brest’s hopes of finishing Week 16 on the podium were shattered.
