New-look PSG defeated in opener
Paris Saint-Germain lost their first game of the season at home to FC Lorient, going down 1-0 on Saturday evening to a goal by the visitors' new recruit Julien Quercia.
PSG have dominated so much of the pre-season talk due to their unprecedented spending and while new French-record signing Javier Pastore was presented to the home fans before the game, it was a Lorient summer signing that stole the show.
Pastore's transfer came too late to allow him to make his debut; whether the Argentine would have made a difference is unsure, but Antoine Kombouaré picked five of the new boys in the PSG starting line-up, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, his side lacked cohesion in the early exchanges. Lorient by contrast impressed from the outset.
New PSG captain Mamadou Sakho failed to deal with a long ball aimed at Quercia early on, and the former Auxerre man set up what looked a certain goal for Kévin Monnet-Paquet only for the 22-year-old to fail to hit the target from two metres out.
Kevin Gameiro hit back for PSG. Making his debut for the capital club against his former employers, he was next to go close when shooting wide of Fabien Audard's right-hand post from the edge of the penalty area.
Quercia, brought to Brittany to replace Gameiro, then went one better by opening the scoring. Yann Jouffre's ball from the right was missed by Alaixys Romao, but Quercia was there to apply the crucial touch at the back post in the 28th minute.
Nene almost levelled the scores when put through by another summer transfer Jérémy Ménez. The Brazilian, seeing Audard coming off his line, tried to lob the Lorient captain, but his effort fell just the wrong side of the crossbar.
Just before half-time Sakho's header from a set piece was cleared by Bruno Ecuele Manga when it looked to be heading over the line, meaning PSG went in at half-time a goal down.
In the second half, Les Parisiens upped the tempo, but it was the away side who went closest to adding to the goals. From a free-kick, Arnold Mvuemba fired a thunderbolt at debutant Salvatore Sirigu's goal only to be denied by the crossbar.
Nene was next to try his luck, working the ball onto his left foot at the right of the penalty area and bringing a spectacular save from Audard.
Like the rest of the PSG line-up, Nene didn't manage to grab a much-needed goal. The side that just missed out on Champions League football last season kicking off their new era with defeat. A strong start for Lorient who have a good record at the Parc des Princes, this being their fifth win there in eight meetings between the two clubs. PSG will need to improve on this result as quickly as possible to justify their summer spending.
