PSG beat Lyon to keep podium dream alive
A freak Zoumana Camara goal was enough for Paris Saint-Germain to beat Lyon 1-0 at the Parc des Princes to revive their Champions League ambitions.
Defender Camara scored with his knee from close range inside the final 15 minutes to extend PSG’s unbeaten home run in Ligue 1 to ten matches. OL had gone nine unbeaten full stop before coming to the capital and missed out on the chance to close to within three points of leaders Lille. PSG leapfrogged Rennes into fourth and are now a single point adrift of Lyon in the battle for third place.
PSG caused all of the problems in the first half and had six chances compared to none for the visitors. Hugo Lloris, France's number one goalkeeper, was called into action on several occasions to save his side, getting his hands to an effort from Mevlut Erding and then coming up with a stupendous stop as a Guillaume Hoarau header from a Marcos Ceara centre appeared destined for the corner of the net.
Hoarau led the Lyon defence a merry dance in the opening 45 minutes and a dribble culminated in a left-footed shot from the edge of the area which Lloris reached low to his right.
Tall forward Hoarau was looking much more like the player who top scored for the club in 2008-2009 in his first season in the capital after joining from Le Havre. All that was missing from him as the sides turned around was a goal, and he would have been disappointed not to have been able to direct a header from a Nene free kick on target.
Lloris would have been upset at the space afforded PSG from set plays with a Nene corner finding Christophe Jallet in acres of room yet the versatile Jallet missed the far post by a metre with a glancing header that had the OL keeper beaten.
Gomis hits bar as OL fight back
A Kim Källström volley was all PSG custodian Grégory Coupet had to deal before the break and the home side should have changed ends in front as Nene missed with a volley of his own – from much closer in than the Swede – after being picked out by Ceara.
OL picked up the pace on the resumption and Bafetimbi Gomis struck the crossbar with a powerful shot after midfielder Maxime Gonalons had skipped his way past three PSG players. Gomis was full of life and a blistering shot from 30 metres forced Coupet to go with the safety first option and tip over.
Camara not shy after rare Lloris error
After what had gone before, it was a shock that the PSG breakthrough came courtesy of a Lloris mistake. He came off his line to attempt to meet a Nene free kick but Hoarau rose above everyone. The striker’s header was going wide but veteran Ludovic Giuly managed to keep it in play – and only just – and stabbed across goal for centre-half Camara to force the ball home from a few centimetres with his knee.
PSG have the semi-final of the French Cup at Ligue 2 outfit Angers to look forward to on Wednesday. Lyon are next in action on Wednesday April 27 when they host Coupe de la Ligue finalists Montpellier.
