PSG sign Dortmund's Abdou Diallo
Defender Abdou Diallo has joined PSG from Bundesliga giants BvB Dortmund on a five-yeardeal. The France U21 international had been in Germany for two years after coming up through the youth academy at AS Monaco.
After signing Pablo Sarabia and Ander Herrera earlier in the month, Paris Saint-Germain have continued to expand their squad, bringing Abdou Diallo (23) in from Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
The France U21 captain, who missed out on the U21 Euros in June on medical grounds, put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the capital club for a reported fee of €32m. The youngster, who turned plenty of heads in Germany during his two-year stint with Mainz 05 and Die Schwarzgelben, can play on the left side of central defence or as a left-back and becomes the fifth option for coach Thomas Tuchel, who now has two left-footed stoppers (Presnel Kimpembe, Diallo) and three right-footed stoppers (Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Thilo Kehrer).
League 1 Conforama champion with Monaco
A product of the AS Monaco youth system, Diallo made his Ligue 1 debut at the age of 18 on 14 December 2014, coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Marseille.
After playing five matches in 2014-2015, he was loaned to Belgian side Zulte Waregem for a season in order to gain experience - which is exactly what he did, playing 35 matches and scoring three goals. However, his return to Monaco saw him continue to warm Leonardo Jardim's bench with just five appearances in 2016-17 - although this was enough to see him win a Ligue 1 Conforama champion's medal as the principality club pipped Paris Saint-Germain to the title.
Having represented France at every youth level, Abdou Diallo then chose a foreign country to finally launch his senior career. He immediately imposed himself at Mainz 05 and impressed the Bundesliga with his qualities - enough to secure a move to heavyweights Borussia Dortmund the following season. In the Ruhr, the young Frenchman was a first-team regular and continued to develop, playing seven Champions League matches - including two group-stage wins over boyhood club Monaco.
Strong competition in defence
A versatile central defender capable of helping out on the left flank, Diallo brings tactical and technical skills to the Parisian rear-guard. Precise in both short and long play, the stopper also has strong leadership qualities, as his captaincy of the France U21 side can attest.
But before he can become a key figure in the Parisian locker room, which is already full of strong personalities, he will have to face up to stiff competition from the likes of Kimpembe, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Kehrer in order to carve out a place in Tuchel's defence.
In terms of big fixtures for the season to come, Paris' new number 22 will clash with boyhood club Monaco the weekends of 30 November 2019 and 12 January 2020. He will certainly also be closely monitoring the dates of the matches against Stade Brestois 29 (9 November 2019 and 2 May 2020), which will give him the opportunity to face his younger brother Ibrahima for the first time as a professional...
