Sensational Sala sweeping all before him
Nantes striker Emiliano Sala is enjoying a sensational season and is second only to Kylian Mbappé in the Ligue 1 Conforama scoring chart.
Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic said simply: "That's what he's paid for. It's his job. He's mentally very strong, and when he's in form like this, he's a real goalscorer. I hope he overtakes my tally."
Sala still has a way to go reach Halildodzic's record of 28 Nantes goals from 1985 but the Argentine already has 10 goals in just 12 games. In France he's ahead of Neymar, while in Europe, he's clear of the likes of Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Sergio Aguero.
"I mustn't get carried away"
Sala told The Ligue 1 Show on BeIn Sports: "I always give my best and try to fulfil my role, which is to score goals. Sometimes things go well, sometimes it's harder. I'm happy to be in a purple patch. It feels great but I mustn't get carried away."
Yet with six goals in his last three outings, it's hard for Sala not to get carried away. Since former Nantes striker Halilhodzic took charge, the 28-year-old has been given a new lease of life.
Halilhodzic commented: "I'm happy for him because when I arrived he was feeling pretty down. We've talked a lot together, and now when you see how much he's giving the team, how hard he's battling, you don't get many strikers like him these days."
At this rate, the former Bordeaux hitman will have no trouble beating his previous best tally of 12 goals in a season. Rennes are next in his sights on Sunday afternoon in the derby.
Sala said: "I'm lucky to have Vahid as a coach. He used to be a great attacker. He talks to me and offers me advice so I have to use that. I have to listen to him and keep on working in the same way."
