Boyhood idol, models, most impressive opponent, favourite move... Stade de Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy opened up in this short interview!

Why do you wear the number 16?

"This has been my number since my first National (D3) game at AS Cherbourg. The 1 and the 30 were taken so there was only the 16 left. But as it brought me luck, I kept it."

Who was your childhood idol?

"Ronaldo. Not Cristiano, the Brazilian. I liked his dribbling, his power, his sense of finishing, everything. What he was did was huge."

Commerce, Brighton and Cavani

What job would you do if you weren't a footballer?

"I would have been in business, I think. Life is still long, so you never know! I studied in this field because I have always liked having contact with people."

Who is the most impressive player you've ever faced?

"It's Edinson Cavani. He is constantly in motion, he anticipates the mistakes of his opponents, he is super-complete. He's a really complicated player to face. Faced with an attacker like that, the whole team adapts. We play deeper, we close the spaces..."

What was the first jersey you received?

"With the club in my neighbourhood in Le Havre, Caucriauville, we went out to Brighton, England. I was 11 years old and the host club gifted us all jerseys."

'I like Gianluigi Buffon'

Who's your role model in football?

"There are several of them. I like Gianluigi Buffon for his longevity and his ability to adapt from year to year. I also appreciate Manuel Neuer for his passing game and the room he takes up in goal. There are also Ter Stegen and Oblak."

What is your favourite part of the game?

"The aerial challenges, because when I get them right it's very reassuring for everyone."

What do you think is the toughest part of the game?

"It depends... A simple gesture can become difficult depending on the situation."

Who is the craziest person in the Reims dressing room?

"At Reims, I don't know... But the craziest player I've ever met is [current Aston Villa forward] Jonathan Kodjia. We were together at Cherbourg. I have a lot of anecdotes about him but I prefer to keep them to myself [laughs]."

What is your best memory of the 2018-2019 season?

"I would say our first game of the season, our victory in Nice (0-1). It was complicated for me because I had missed all the preparation games because of a broken finger but the coach decided to line me up anyway. We won there and it launched our season, so it was a special match."
