Strasbourg and Guingamp share spoils in thriller
RC Strasbourg Alsace and EA Guingamp shared six goals in a thrilling encounter at the Stade de la Meinau on Saturday.
RC Strasbourg Alsace 3 - 3 EA Guingamp
This was a repeat of last month's Coupe de la Ligue final in Lille, but the contrast between the two games was stark - Strasbourg needed a penalty shoot-out to win the final after a goalless 120 minutes, while this time the sides played out a richly entertaining 3-3 draw.
Guingamp twice took the lead before having to come from behind to grab a precious point in their fight to avoid relegation, while the draw for Strasbourg was their sixth in their last eight Ligue 1 Conforama outings.
The visitors went ahead with half-time approaching when Pedro Rebocho's free-kick delivery from the right was headed home by Marcus Thuram on the edge of the six-yard box (37'). However, the home side were back level within two minutes of that, as a Sanjin Prcić ball into the area was diverted into the net by giant striker Ludovic Ajorque.
Rare goal for Sorbon
Guingamp found themselves back in front shortly after the hour mark, and Rebocho was once again the provider. The Portugese full-back sent a low ball from the left across the face of goal for Lucas Deaux to score at the far post (63').
However, the home side once again hit back. Cheick Traoré cleared a cross from the right but the ball fell to Prcić just outside the box. He took a touch before smashing home his second goal since signing on loan from Levante in January (69').
Soon after that Thierry Laurey's team took the lead for the first time as Anthony Gonçalves delivered a fine ball from wide on the right for Ajorque to stretch and score at the far post (73'). Nevertheless, Guingamp dug deep to grab an equaliser with just three minutes remaining - a Thuram header came back off the bar and the ball fell for captain Jérémy Sorbon to nod in a rare goal from close range.
THE PLAYER: Ludovic Ajorque
The giant striker, who stands 1.97m tall, produced two striker's goals, scoring with his thigh and then with a lunge at the far post, to take his tally for the season to eight Ligue 1 Conforama goals. This was his third brace of the campaign - he previously scored twice in Strasbourg's 5-1 win at AS Monaco in January and again in the 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyonnais last month.
THE STAT: 6
Anthony Gonçalves has been directly involved in six goals in his last six league games for Strasbourg, scoring four and setting up two more.
