Thumping away win for PSG
By D. Crossan
PSG closed to within four points of leaders Lille with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Nice. Ludovic Giuly, Guillaume Hoarau and Sylvain Armand scored for PSG. Nice had Drissa Diakité sent off late on.
Nice came into this 17th in the table and just two points above the bottom three. The weather was poor on the Côte d’Azur yet Antoine Kombouaré’s high-fliers produced some sunshine football three days after drawing 2-2 at BATE Borisov with the mercury reading minus 17 degrees in Minsk.
PSG’s first major chance arrived when Nene stole the ball in midfield and found Siaka Tiené. The left-back floated the ball up for Mevlut Erding and the Turkish international would have scored but for brilliant goalkeeping by David Ospina, who is said to be a PSG target.
Giuly header, Hoarau volley
PSG hit the front in the 24th minute. Nene’s corner was flicked on by Guillaume Hoarau and Ludovic Giuly pounced at the back post. The little former Barcelona man with a rare headed goal after being left blissfully unmarked by ex-PSG midfielder Didier Digard.
If Ospina or any other goalkeeper do arrive before next campaign, Apoula Edel has promised fight for his place and the ‘keeper showed his skills to keep out an Anthony Mounier header.
A minute before the break, PSG doubled their lead. Nene’s precise ball was imed for Hoarau but the tall striker still had plenty to, controlling the ball on his chest – albeit with the hint of an arm – and firing an unstoppable volley into the far corner for his seventh Ligue 1 strike of the season.
Nene back to best
PSG top scorer Nene was hunting a 14th of the league campaign and only more brilliance from Ospina got in the way of that. After a mini-slump in form he looked dangerous every time he touched the ball in this game.
A Nene one-two with Clément Chantôme led to PSG’s third with 15 minutes remaining. Ospina saved from Nene but defender Sylvain Armand was there to crash home the rebound. Diakité had had enough of Nene and was dismissed for a vicious foul on the attacking midfielder.
With teams around them also taking maximum points, this was a vital win for PSG. Nice stay fourth-bottom.
