Metz secure top-flight return
FC Metz clinched promotion to Ligue 1 with four matches to spare after a 3-0 victory away to AJ Auxerre on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Gaëtan Bussmann, Yeni Ngbakoto and Diafra Sakho earned Les Grenats all three points at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps to secure a second consecutive promotion and ensure a return to the top tier for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Albert Cartier’s side have been top of the Ligue 2 table ever since late October and a run of seven games without defeat has ensured that they will end the season on the podium, with a gap of ten points down to RC Lens in second meaning the title is likely to be on its way to the Stade Saint-Symphorien as well.
Metz were relegated to the third-tier Championnat National for the first time in their history two years ago but the appointment as coach of former player Cartier has helped turn things around. They came straight back up last season and have carried on the momentum this time around, inspired by 19-goal top scorer Sakho.
Twice winners of the Coupe de France in the 1980s, Metz have spent a total of 57 seasons in the top flight and finished second in 1997-98, when Lens beat them to the title on goal difference.
