Champions Trophy memories: Makelele miss
Wednesday's match in Radès sees Marseille make their Champions Trophy bow but PSG have already contested the event four times with two wins, including the inaugural edition in 1996 thanks to a penalty miss from a certain Claude Makelele.
1996: Nantes 2-2 PSG (PSG win 6-5 on penalties)
PSG coach Antoine Kombouaré is set to name 37-year-old midfielder Makelele in his starting line-up to face OM but the veteran's only previous Champions Trophy appearance came AGAINST PSG for Nantes back in 1996.
Makelele has rarely got on the scoresheet in his illustrious career - netting only once in 65 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG- so it was perhaps no real surprise that it was his shootout miss in Brest in 1996 that saw the capital club become the first name on the Champions Trophy honours board.
2004: Lyon 1-1 PSG (Lyon win 7-6 on penalties)
PSG's other 37-year-old, goalkeeper Grégory Coupet, has won all five Champions Trophy matches he has contested. The former French international was a winner for Lyon in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007.
In Cannes in 2004 Coupet thwarted Vahid Halilhodzic's PSG in the shootout after a 1-1 draw with Fabrice Fiorèse cancelling out Giovane Elber's opener for OL.
Kombouaré will be hoping that both Coupet and Makelele can exert a positive influence on proceedings come Wednesday evening.
