Montreal gets 2015-16 season curtain-raiser

Trophée des Champions

The 2015-16 Ligue 1 campaign will kick off in Canada for the second time after the LFP decided to stage the Trophée des Champions in Montreal.

The Quebec city was the first international venue for the French top-flight's traditional curtain-raiser when the LFP first decided to stage the game, which features the previous season's Ligue 1 title winners and the Coupe de France victors, outside of France in 2009.

Three African cities have staged it (Tunis 2010, Tangiers 2011 & Libreville 2013), as has New York City in 2012, while this season's game, which saw Paris Saint-Germain get the better of En Avant Guingamp, was played in Beijing.

The LFP decided to stage the game in Montreal once more as football is rapidly developing in Canada, which will host the women's World Cup between 6-15 July next year.
