Tangier to stage 2017-18 curtain-raiser

Trophée des Champions

The 2017-18 Trophée des Champions will be staged in the Moroccan city of Tangier for the second time in its history, the French Football League has announced.

Already the stage for the traditional season-opener in 2011, Tangier's ultra-modern 45,000-capacity Stade de Tanger will play host to the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners (or the Ligue 1 runners-up if a team does the domestic double) a week before the start of the new season.

It will mark the fourth time the LFP has elected an African city to stage the event after Tunis (2010), Tangier (2011) and the Gabonese capital Libreville (2013), and means the competing teams will not have to contend with jetlag so close to the opening of the 2017-18 campaign.
