TDC: China a happy hunting ground for Buffon
Italy superstar Gigi Buffon, freshly arrived at Paris Saint-Germain, could play in his third supercup in China should Thomas Tuchel opt to field him in the Trophée des Champions in Shenzhen on 4 August.
Gianluigi Buffon has won six of the Italian supercups (a record) he has contested in his career, and is hoping to take this form into the Trophée des Champions against AS Monaco in Shenzhen, China, on 4 August.
The showpiece season curtain-raiser will be his tenth supercup appearance since 1999, and more specifically, his third played in China. While at Juventus, the club with which he won five of his Italian supercups, Buffon made the pre-season trip to China on two occasions: the Supercoppa Italiana in Beijing in 2012 and the one in Shanghai in 2015.
The Italy legend emerged victorious on both occasions, so it's no surprise that has nothing but positives to describe the experience.
"This is a magnificent memory," he told his Chinese hosts after lifting the 2015 supercup. "Thank you for another incredible welcome here (after 2012). It's a nice warm place and I would like to come here with my family to enjoy a new kind of experience."
Winning ways in the east
In 2012, the Italian conceded a goal to new teammate Edinson Cavani, who at the time turned out for Napoli, but nonetheless ended up lifting the Supercoppa once again, nine years after the first time. He returned to China two years later alongside the likes of Kingsley Coman, Paul Pogba and Patrice Evra, and captained La Vecchia Signora to a clean-sheet victory over Lazio to once again claim pre-season gold.
So now, as he returns to his happy hunting ground, Buffon will be looking continue his excellent form in the Trophée des Champions with Paris Saint-Germain.
