Stade Brestois 29 1-4 Olympique de Marseille

THE MATCH

After two games without victory in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, Marseille returned to winning ways against Basel in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, and they bounced into this game in confident mood, Gerson giving them the lead inside five minutes after latching onto Milik's forward pass (3'). Milik - who scored both of Marseille's goals in their 2-1 triumph three days ago - had already missed an open goal (1') when he fired in a left-footed free-kick which Marco Bizot did brilliantly to turn around the post (13'). Brest carved a chance of their own midway through the half with Youcef Belaïli getting the break of the ball after a poor Pol Lirola clearance, but the Algeria winger, in trying to side-foot his finish, got under the ball and lifted it over Pau Lopez's crossbar (27'). Indeed, Lopez didn't have a save to make in the first half and Marseille might have carried a two-goal lead into the interval, but Pape Gueye saw another stinging effort saved by Bizot (34') and it was 1-0 at the break.

Marseille make sure

Martin Satriano powered a header towards Lopez's goal with the first attack of the second half, but the big Spaniard collected comfortably (46'). A long Jere Uronen ball forward  then tempted Lopez off his line and Jérémy Le Douaron got there first, but he was at such a wide angle that he needed a fellow runner to cut back to, and none materialised (59'). The heavens then opened in Britanny, and the goals soon poured in alongside the rain. After Geuye had thumped another effort narrowly wide (62'), Milik made it 2-0 when he headed home Amine Harit's corner (63'), and a few minutes later it was three, with Harit reacting quickest to Gueye's parried shot to prod the ball past Bizot (71'). Cédric Bakambu saw a bullet header cannon back off the post (89') before Irvin Cardona headed home a consolation (90'+2), but seconds later Under opportunistically wrapped up a 4-1 win (90'3').

THE PLAYER: Arkadiuz Milik

With a goal and an assist, this was a superlative performance from Milik. The Pole hasn't always been in favour under Jorge Sampaoli this season, with the Argentine tactician often having Dimitri Payet - a midfielder by trade - lead the line. Milik looks to be winning his coach over though, and both will be pleased with the fact that he now has four goal involvements in his last two games across all competitions.

THE STAT: 50

Marseille now have 50 points, which is 10 less than last season but with 10 fewer games played. They dropped into the Europa Conference League from the Europa League on the continent this term - hence the recent Basel fixture - but les Phocéens look a good fair to return to the Champions League at the end of the campaign. They now have the same points as OGC Nice in second, a superior goal-difference, and go head-to-head with les Aiglons next Sunday.
