Alexis Sanchez scored his third goal in five games as Olympique de Marseille beat AJ Auxerre 2-0 on Saturday, the former Arsenal man in fine form ahead of a reunion with former North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

Alexis had three-and-a-half glittering seasons with Arsenal between 2014 and 2018, scoring 80 goals in 166 games and winning two FA Cups along the way before leaving for Manchester United midway through the 2017/18 campaign.

The Chilean legend scored three times in 11 meetings with Tottenham during his time in England, and will have the chance to extend his record against the Premier League side when Marseille head to White Hart Lane to open their Champions League Group D campaign on Wednesday.

Marseille are packed to the rafters with Arsenal players past and present, with Alexis joined in les Phocéens' squad by Mattéo Guendouzi - who assisted his goal against Auxerre - as well as Sead Kolasinac and Nuno Tavares, who is on loan from the Gunners. They might not all play in midweek.

"It was the third game in a row, so it wasn't easy," coach Igor Tudor said after the Auxerre game. "Mentally, we need humility. Our pressing hasn't always been good, but in the end we deserves this win. We had difficulties. We were a bit late to shoot at time. It wasn't a perfect match, but we had to win here."

Marseille are back in the Champions League after a single season away having finished as runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain last term. The only French team ever to be crowned European champions, the fans can sometimes feel insatiable, says Tudor, whose side have now won four on the bounce.

"Does it seem far?" he asked of OM fan's exacting standards. "Be careful, it can also change quickly! There's passion, many people support us. We'll continue to work. I like that we're attacking, that we press the opponent. For me, the fans have to have fun, I always think that way. The message remains the same."
