FC Metz let three points slip in their 3-2 home loss to Stade Rennais on Saturday night at Stade Saint-Symphorien.

Metz held the lead twice in this contest, with Les Grenats opening the scoring in the 17th minute courtesy of Georges Mikautadze. The lead for the home side didn't last long as Rennes would level the match through Amine Gouiri in the 23rd minute.

The scoring in the first half didn't stop there as Metz headed into the dressing room with positive momentum. Papa Diallo gave László Bölöni’s side the advantage, scoring in the 45th minute with the match nearing halftime. Mikautadze also chipped in with an assist on Diallo’s goal, contributing to both of Metz's goals in the first half.

Rennes leveled the score at 2-2 in the 73rd minute, with Benjamin Bourigeaud converting a penalty. The visitors would then break the hearts of Metz supporters with a goal from Arnaud Kalimuendo in the second-half stoppage time to give Rennes a 3-2 lead.

Metz's chances of scoring a late goal were hampered after Mikautadze received a red card in the second-half stoppage time, allowing the final score to stay at 3-2. The loss to Rennes marks Metz's second straight defeat after a loss last weekend to LOSC Lille.

The result isn't ideal for Metz, who are battling to climb out of the relegation playoff position and remain safely in France's top flight. With two matches left on their schedule, Metz trail 15th-place Le Havre by three points. Les Graoullys will next travel to Stade de la Meinau on May 12 to face RC Strasbourg

Julien Stéphan and his team have now won two of their last three matches, aiming to end the season on a positive note. Rennes also have two matches left on their schedule, including a thrilling clash against RC Lens on May 12 at Roazhon Park
