Chelsea's UEFA Europa League victory against Arsenal on Wednesday evening was great news for Olympique Lyonnais as it meant OL go directly into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Had Arsenal won then OL would have had to have come through two qualifying rounds to make the group stage. Chelsea's 4-1 win took away that necessity as The Blues are already in the Champions League by dint of their league position in the English Premier League.
OL benefited in this fashion in 2018 as well when Atlético Madrid beat Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Europa League final in… Lyon. Juninho, the new sporting director, and Sylvinho, the new coach, can now look forward to a first group stage game on September 17 or 18.
