THE MATCH

Rennes climbed into the top half thanks to this dramatic success, one deserved on the balance of play given they had 11 attempts on target to only three from the hosts. Rennes enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and Benjamin Bourigeaud, who'd scored the winner when these sides met in Week 10, had a long-range effort saved by Mike Maignan.

Thiago Maia dragged an attempt wide on 18 minutes and is still searching for his first French top flight goal. Galtier's men were in front four minutes before the interval when Yassine Benzia hung up a cross from the left and centre-half Junior Alonso powered home an unstoppable header.

Victory would have lifted LOSC level on points with Rennes, yet the visitors were determined to ensure that wouldn't happen. Maignan did well to keep out a Yoann Gourcuff shot and then on 63 minutes Ismaïla Sarr, more threatening when switched to the left from centre-forward, struck the post.

Tomas Koubek got down well at the other end to deny Anwar El Ghazi but the Czech's opposite number Maignan endured a horrific close to the game. First the 22-year-old allowed a James Léa Siliki shot from 25 metres to go straight through him on 85 minutes. Then Maignan might have done better when faced by a Bourigeaud free-kick. Léa Siliki pounced to turn it goalwards, Maignan saved from sub Firmin Mubele only for visiting captain Benjamin André to slam the ball into the net with only a minute remaining.

Called from the bench with ten minutes to go to replace Yoann Gourcuff, the 21-year-old box-to-box midfielder played a critical role, netting his first Ligue 1 Conforama goal and Léa Siliki was involved in the second too, the quickest to react when Benjamin Bourigeaud's free-kick was beaten away by Mike Maignan.

This was only Rennes' second win in six games in all competitions. Sabri Lamouchi's men had lost the other four encounters in a tough run of games, falling to PSG (twice), Monaco and OM.
