Stade de Reims have announced that captain Yunis Abdelhamid - key pillar in the league's second-tightest defence - has extended his contract with the Champagne club through to June 2022.

There can be no doubt that Stade de Reims' emergence as a top-ten side has had plenty to do with captain and stopper Yunis Abdelhamid, who has played every minute of every match in every competition for David Guion's side since the beginning of last season!

Accordingly, Stade de Reims were extremely pleased to announce on Tuesday that the 32-year-old central Moroccan international has extended his contract through to June 2022.

Caillot: 'Building the future'

"Yunis is proof that you can always keep making progress. He's a real role model for the club's young players and a true leader in the dressing room. With his contract up in six months, and with performance like he has been giving, he was not short of offers," enthused club president Jean-Pierre Caillot. "What made the difference is the bond of trust built up with Yunis, who feels good at Reims. That can be seen both on and off the pitch. His extension shows that we are building the future with players and men who embody our values. Yunis' experience and his profile as a demanding competitor will still be invaluable to us in the coming seasons."

Abdelhamid - the only player in the league to play all 38 fixtures of the 2018-19 season - played his 60th consecutive Ligue 1 Conforama match in Round 22 and is homing in on Daniel Congré's record of 66 consecutive matches with Toulouse between October 2010 and May 2012.

What's more, during that time, he has helped Reims to achieve the third-best defensive record among Europe's top five leagues (second-tightest in Ligue 1 Conforama) while also finding the time to score six goals in his 104 appearances.
