Olympique Lyonnais might not be favourites as they take on Juventus for a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, but ligue1.com's David Crossan looks at the reasons why OL can have dreams…

Rudi Garcia's Italian job

Garcia coached Roma between the summer of 2013 and early 2016 and twice finished runner-up to… Juventus. Garcia knows all about Italian football culture and tactics, admitting to L'Equipe that coming up against so many teams playing with three or five at the back allowed him to develop as a coach. Garcia experimented with a three-man backline of his own in the 2-0 league win at Metz on Friday evening and is liable to retain the system for the Champions League showdown.

Garcia conceded: "Our good fortune is that nobody is tipping us. People think we've lost the tie in advance. A good result would be not conceding at home. But we must also pose them problems if we want to have a chance of qualifying. We'll do everything we can to pull off a feat."

The Barcelona Precedent

OL managed a creditable 0-0 at home to Barcelona at this stage last year, nullifying Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembélé and Lionel Messi. OL's squad is not as strong as 12 months ago because of injuries and player sales but seven of the team that started that goalless draw could begin on Wednesday against Juventus when the primary aim will be to keep Cristiano Ronaldo in check. It should be noted that OL when on to lose the second leg to Barcelona 5-1.

Houssem Aouar

The gifted youth product has - like his team - been inconsistent this season but the midfielder has come up with the goods when it really matters. Aouar scored a beauty against Leipzig last December to help OL into the last 16 of the Champions League, netted the winner against Olympique de Marseille to qualify OL for the semi-finals of the Coupe de France and was also on target against LOSC in the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue, a tie OL eventually made it through on penalties. Enjoying his most prolific season, Aouar is a big-night player and OL need him to have a big game on Wednesday.

Moussa Dembele, Olympique Lyonnais, goal celebration

Moussa Dembélé

With 10 goals to his name in 2020, including a penalty at Metz last Friday, Dembélé could not be in better form as he spearheads the OL attack and attempts to prove he belongs at this rarefied level. Since joining OL he has managed only one Champions League goal in 12 appearances and Wednesday would be the perfect night for him to score his first of the current campaign, especially with Memphis Depay a long-term injury absentee. Dembélé will benefit from having the mobile Karl Toko-Ekambi in attack with him.

Cristiano Ronaldo can't go on forever

Five times a Champions League winner, the Portuguese legend is now 35 but his appetite for goals is as insatiable as ever. By his standards the group stage this season was a major disappointment as he managed only two goals in six games. Lyon's defence has been a problem this season, however, and they'll have to be 100% focused and on their game if they're to shut out Ronaldo and his Juventus colleagues.
