Dario Benedetto may be Olympique de Marseille's top scorer with 11 goals in his maiden Ligue 1 Conforama season, but he says it took quite some adjusting to the standard of defending in France compared to his native Argentina.

Benedetto joined Marseille from Boca Juniors last summer, tasked with filling the considerable boots of the Brescia-bound Mario Balotelli at the Orange Vélodrome, and he has wasted little time in endearing himself to the Phocéen faithful.

Benedetto opened his account for the club in the Round 3 2-1 win at OGC Nice and his 11 goals in total have come in at a rate of one every 192 minutes. Despite having seemingly hit the ground running, Benedetto admitted that he found things difficult at first.

"In Argentina, you can come across big, strong defenders, but slow ones," he explained to La Tuittera 52. "But here in France they are big, strong, and fast too! I struggled at the beginning."

Marseille are leaders and champions Paris Saint-Germain's closest pursuers after 28 games played, with a six-point cushion on third-place Stade Rennais FC. Andre Villas Boas's side look likely to return to the UEFA Champions League after a six-year hiatus, but Benedetto is taking nothing for granted.

"Our aim is to play in the Champions League," he said. "Today, we're six points ahead of third but there are still a lot of matches to come and we're going to have make sure we don't get overconfident."

Previously the top scorer in the Argentine Primera Division as well as the CONCACAF Champions League, Benedetto sits seven goals behind PSG's Kylian Mbappé and AS Monaco's Wissam Ben Yedder in this season's goal race, but he remains optimistic.

"It's going to be tricky to catch Mbappé up for the golden boot," he concluded. "But I'm not scared of anything and I'm going to try to score in every match!"
