Worthy champions
Paris Saint-Germain repeated their historic performance from last season, claiming all four domestic trophies including a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title that puts them level with Girondins de Bordeaux and Stade de Reims with a total of six French championship titles. Their fourth title has proven their most accomplished so far, with records broken for number of points (96), longest unbeaten run (36 matches over two seasons) and the biggest away win in Ligue 1 history - 9-0 away to ESTAC Troyes - that marked their unprecedentedly early title win in Week 30.
They collected excellent results all season long, but the French champions also played with exceptional quality, scoring 102 goals - streets ahead of any competition in the modern era - as they dominated the league. And this came thanks in no small part to a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who claimed his third Ligue 1 top scorer crown in four seasons with the exceptional total of 38 goals, which saw him become the most effective striker in Ligue 1 history - 0.93 goals per match. Beyond Paris Saint-Germain's domination, the season was also marked by the second-highest goal total in the last 30 years - 960 goals by all teams in all Ligue 1 matches in season 2015-16!
OL, ASM battle it out
Behind the emphatic champions in 2015-16, Olympique Lyonnais (2nd) and AS Monaco (3rd) made up the Ligue 1 top three, the same as last season. Ranked just 11th at the end of January, Olympique Lyonnais turned in a sensational performance in the second half of the season, accruing the league's best record over the last 15 rounds and remaining undefeated at new home stadium the Parc OL (eight wins and two draws for 87% of points in 2016) to finish second and clinch a top-three place for the 16thtime in the past 18 seasons! This OL side highlights more than ever the success of the club's youth academy, with 67% of their goals coming from home-grown players. Second place was secured in a spectacular face-off with rivals Monaco, when OL ran out 6-1 winners at the Parc OL in Week 37. Monaco proved the more consistent side over the course of the season, sitting in the top three from Week 18 until the end of the season.
Aiglons, Dogues up for a fight
Meanwhile OGC Nice (fourth for the second time in four seasons), whose form had them in the top five for the last 21 rounds of the season, and LOSC (5th), in the top five for the sixth time in eight seasons and the league third-best side in the second half of the season, provided some of the other highlights of the season, notably through in-form forwards Hatem Ben Arfa (OGCN) and Sofiane Boufal (LOSC).
