Paris Saint-Germain have announced the appointment of former club player and Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino as new head coach through to 2022 following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel during the week.

Reigning Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions Paris Saint-Germain now have the man to lead them through what is one of the tightest title races for years. On Sunday, the club announced the appointment of former Argentina defender Mauricio Pochettino on an 18-month contract with an option for an extra year.

'A special place in my heart'

"I am really happy and honoured to become the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain and I would like to thank the Club's management for the trust they have placed in me," said the 48-year-old, who played for the capital club from 2001 to 2003, making 95 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals. "As you know, this club has always held a special place in my heart. I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes."

A lot has changed at Paris Saint-Germain since Pochettino's playing days, the QSI era having brought with it an explosion of big names, success and exposure - not to mention trophies! - and the Argentine is keen to bring his skills to bear on the talent-stacked squad he now has at his disposal.

"I return to the Club today with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players," said Neymar and Kylian Mbappé's new boss. "This team has fantastic potential and my staff and we will do everything we can to get the best for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions. We will also do our utmost to give our team the combative and attacking playing identity that Parisian fans have always loved."

Right down to business

Pochettino, who coached Tottenham Hotspur to the UEFA Champions League final in 2018-19, has proven that he has a knack for getting the best out of top-tier talent. This will clearly be a must as he looks to fend off resolute title challenges from leader OL and second-placed LOSC - while dealing with the club's current raft of injuries and the pressures of a UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie with the inevitable - and dreaded - Barcelona.

The former Parc des Princes favourite will take charge of his first training session on Sunday 3 January 2021, following the winter break, with the Ligue 1 Uber Eats Round 18 clash on Wednesday to prepare for.
