Kylian Mbappé and France underwhelmed in their opening FIFA World Cup qualifier, being held to a 1-1 by Ukraine on Wednesday, but player and country can put that right against Kazakhstan on Sunday.

Kazakhstan - France

- Kick-off: 14:00 GMT

Les Bleus remain undefeated in their last 15 competitive matches since being shocked by Turkey back in June 2019, but the world champions were expecting better than a draw in their Group D opener against Ukraine, with Antoine Griezmann's early strike cancelled out by a Presnel Kimpembe own goal.

Mbappé - who leads the Ligue 1 Uber eats scoring charts this season with 20 and has 16 in 40 appearances for his country - cut a frustrated figure at the Stade de France and made way for Anthony Martial with 13 minutes to play. His place is far from under threat, though.

"I'll discuss it quietly with him. He knows he didn't have a good game," said head coach Didier Deschamps. "He wasn't at his best, but the opponent adapted, there were two or three players on him. Ukraine's set-up impacted his influence in the game."

Deschamps' opposite number Andriy Shevchenko later admitted that Ukraine had doubled up on Mbappé, sometimes leaving the PSG star with three men to beat.

PSG pair Mbappé and Kimpembe are likely to keep their places despite their evening to forget, but Chelsea's N'Golo Kanté has returned to London after picking up a hamstring injury. Manchester United star Paul Pogba is likely to take his place in midield.

Kazakhstan - who are 120 places behind France in the latest FIFA World Rankings - will be playing their first game in four months after their friendly against Kyrgyzstan was cancelled.

Talgat Baysufinov's side tend to line up in a 3-5-2 formation which should leave Mbappé with plenty of space in behind, while suspended defensive midfielder Islambek Kuat hasn't been called up.
