After a week that saw Ligue 1 Uber Eats thrust into in the spotlight of world football with the arrival of Lionel Messi, it was back to business in brilliant fashion in France’s top-flight. Shock results yielded unexpected front-runners and 34 goals rained down in an eventful and dramatic second round of fixtures.

PSG win as Messi watches on

Lionel Messi was in the stands to see his new teammates take on Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes and the six-time Ballon D'Or winner was treated to a thrilling show as PSG survived a scare to overcome resilient 10-man Strasbourg.

Messi was presented to the fans before the game in which compatriot Mauro Icardi opened the scoring (3’). Kylian Mbappé then provided the impetus to put PSG 3-0 up, hammering a shot in off the hapless Ludovic Ajorque (25', o.g.) and then teeing up Julian Draxler for a tap-in (27'). Julien Stéphan’s troops staged a second half renaissance through Kevin Gamiero (53’) and Ajorque (64’) but PSG's Pablo Sarabia bagged PSG's fourth to put the match to bed in the dying stages (86').

"I am very happy with the three points at the end of a very special week for the team," said a delighted PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino. "The challenge is to build good ways of working and I think that when all of the players are available, it's going to be a special situation."

Galtier's Nice destroy champions

Christophe Galtier’s return to LOSC went as well as he could ever have imagined as his OGC Nice side won 4-0 at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. Goals from Kasper Dolberg (1', 64'), Hitcham Boudaoui (5') and an Amine Gouiri penalty (45') gave last season's title-winning coach a resounding victory in familiar surroundings.

"I enjoyed this performance," said a composed Galtier. "I wanted my team to express itself in the same way as the team I led last season (LOSC) with character, enthusiasm and solidarity. We are happy with the victory, but we must keep our feet on the ground."

Kovac rues 'careless' Monaco performance

Monaco head coach Niko Kovac admitted his team had been careless following their 1-0 defeat at Lorient. The result leaves the principality side with just one point from their opening two games.

Terem Moffi’s winner from the penalty spot (31’) ensured Christophe Pélissier’s men stretched their unbeaten home run to seven games. Kovac's team must now get back to winning ways to avoid being cut adrift from the other title contenders.

"We dominated the match, but we only had two or three clear chances. We know that in football carelessness can be costly," said a frank Kovac after the final whistle. "Last week (against Nantes) it was a corner, tonight it is a penalty. Then it became difficult. They had no chances except the penalty but defended well; we must congratulate them."

Bosz 'worried' as Angers down 10-man Lyon

Angers continued their 100% start to the season with a 3-0 win at home to Lyon, leaving OL head coach Peter Bosz worried about his team’s form. Les Gones have now failed to win in their opening two games for the first time since 2010.

A Sofiane Boufal goal (20’) got Angers out of the blocks early on, then a calamitous mix-up saw Lyon’s Marcelo divert the ball into his own net (53’). Maxwell Cornet was given his marching orders just after the hour-mark and then debutant Azzedine Ounahi finished off OL with a smart finish (77’)

"I'm worried, it's driving me crazy," said an exasperated Bosz at full time. "Our supporters travelled a long way, but what did we give them? Nothing, nothing at all. If we want to win something, the mentality must change quickly. I didn't like what I saw today at all."

Rampant Marseille pegged back

Marseille threw away what should have been an unassailable lead to draw 2-2 at home to Bordeaux, as Vladimir Petkovic claimed his first point as Les Girondins coach.

First-half goals from Cengiz Under (34') and the in-form Dimitri Payet (41') put OM in the ascendancy but Bordeaux found their way back into the contest when Timothée Pembélé, on loan from PSG and Rémi Oudin struck early in the second half to claim a precious point.

Leonardo Balerdi was sent off late on for the hosts who have four points from their opening two games.

Bayo strikes again

Clermont striker Mohamed Bayo continued his formidable early-season form, scoring twice as his side toppled fellow promotees Troyes 2-0.

The Ghanaian now sits at the top of the scoring charts with three goals, thanks to his brace, the first of which put Clermont ahead (53’). Bayo added a second 12 minutes later to put the game beyond doubt as Les Lanciers, yet to concede this season, continue to impress in their first-ever season in Ligue 1 Uber Eats.

Draws at Brest and Lens

Brest and Rennes shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Stade Francis-Le Blé. Sehrou Guirassy’s header (84’) looked to ensure Bruno Genesio’s Rennes would take three points against their Breton rivals until substitute Jeremy Le Douaron equalised for Brest in added time.

Meanwhile, Lens and Saint Étienne played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the north of France. Wahbi Khazri (1') and Denis Bouanga (52') netted for the visitors before Ignatius Ganago (36’) and Seko Fofana, 12 minutes from time, gave the Lens faithful something to cheer about in their first Ligue 1 Uber Eats match at the imposing Stade Bollaert-Dellelis since the 2014-15 campaign.

Goals galore at Reims

Reims and Montpellier exchanged six goals in a 3-3 thriller at the Stade Auguste Delaune.

Two first-half goals from Reims striker Moreto Cassama cancelled out Nicolas Cozza’s opener for Olivier Dall’Oglio’s men. However, Andy Delort and Gaëtan Laborde strikes ensured a quick-fire turnaround for Montpellier but Ilan Kebbal (83') levelled it up to pinch Reims a point in dramatic fashion.

Kombouaré in dreamland

Antoine Kombouaré admitted that he had "dreamt" about the start his side made in their 2-0 win at home to Metz.

Randal Kolo Muani opened his account for the season (12’) before Ludovic Blas finished the contest with a neat finish (49’) to give Les Canaris a respectable four points from their opening two games.
