Kylian Mbappé is expected to start up front for France when they take on Belgium in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals in Torino on Thursday evening.

Mbappé has been in electric form for Paris Saint-Germain this season, contributing four goals and five assists at a clip on one every 103 minutes he has played across games in Ligue 1 Uber Eats and the UEFA Champions League.

 

In line for his 50th cap on Thursday, the 22-year-old has nonetheless gone six games without a goal for his country, and recently floated the idea that the national team might be better off without him. Coach Didier Deschamps and a number of teammates have leapt to dismiss such a claim.

 

'Happy to be here'

 

"I never rely on what somebody supposedly said," explained Deschamps. "The most important things are the discussions we have internally, with no room for interpretation. Kylian's happy to be here. The past is the past; what's important is today or tomorrow."

"Everyone loves him here," concurred centre-back Lucas Hernandez, who is expected to have brother Theo for company in defence at Juventus's Allianz Stadium. "He's highly respected. He must know that the France team needs him."

 

Mbappé is one of seven Ligue 1 Uber Eats players called up by Deschamps, the forward joined in the squad by PSG teammate Presnel Kimpembe as well as AS Monaco pair Wissam Ben Yedder and Aurélien Tchouaméni, Olympique de Marseille's Mattéo Guendouzi, Léo Dubois of Olympique Lyonnais and Girondins de Bordeaux goalkeeper Benoît Costil.

 

Potent attack

 

Mbappé could be the only one of those who starts as France looks to extend an undefeated run in competitive games against the Belgians which stretches back September 1981 - five years before Hugo Lloris, the most senior player in the squad, was born - with Madrid-based pair Karim Benzema and Antoine Griezmann expected to join him in the final third.

 

France may be the world champions, but Belgium are the highest rated team in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

 

Ligue 1 absentees

 

With Jérémy Doku (Stade Rennais FC), Thomas Foket (Stade de Reims) and Matz Sels (RC Strasbourg Alsace) not called up, the most significant Ligue 1 Uber Eats interest might be in captain Eden Hazard, who previously made 194 appearances with LOSC and won the title with them in 2011.

 

Hazard's younger brother Thorgan has returned to Borussia Dortmund due to injury, as has former PSG right-back Thomas Meunier. France, meanwhile, have a fully fit squad to choose from.
