Amid continued difficulty for the club's senior team, winless in Olympique Lyonnais legend Juninho has confirmed he will be stepping down from his position as sporting director as of the mid-season break.

There was much fanfare when the Brazilian, a legendary midfielder and specialist other-worldly free-kicks, signed on as Olympique Lyonnais' sporting director in the summer 2019, but his tenure has not been marked with success as coaches Sylvinho, Rudi Garcia and now Peter Bosz have failed to get the living up to the ambitions of long-time president Jean-Michel Aulas.

'Better for the club'

With just one win in their last five Ligue 1 Uber Eats outings - despite a stellar UEFA Europa League run that has seen them top their group - Lyon's results have brought increasing pressure on Juninho and on Wednesday he made his momentous announcement.

"It's better for the club to prepare for the future and I also need to stop," he told AFP, confirming that he will step down this winter rather than waiting until the end of the season.

While it is too early to speculate on who his replacement may be, Boss and his men have plenty on their plate, with Thursday night's final Europa League group stage clash at the Groupama Stadium quickly followed by Sunday afternoon's trip to face reigning Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions LOSC at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
