Nice captain Dante has signed a 12-month contract extension, tying him to Les Aiglons until 2023.

The veteran Brazilian arrived on the Côte d'Azur in 2016 and has been a mainstay in Nice's rise to the cusp of Champions League qualification.

Proud

"It is a great pride, happiness and joy to have extended my contract here for another year, '' said the 38-year-old centre-back. "I am very proud that we have found this agreement. I wanted to share this news and thank all the people who have trusted me so far and all the players who I continue to learn from every day. I hope to experience a lot of success here at Nice in the future."

Despite being in the twilight of his career, Dante has been in exceptional form for Nice who currently boast the best defence in Ligue 1 Uber Eats and the Brazilian admitted that his love for the club runs deep.

"It's more than a club and player story; it's a love story, I don't mind saying it. I am very intense in everything I do in life. I will never forget the people who reached out to me when I was injured. The club never left me in any doubt about my role here and I appreciated that.

Time for change

"After my injury, I had a period of reflection. I thought I had to reinvent myself as a player, as a person, as a leader. We managed to do it with the help of the coaches. I can't say exactly where I am in relation to my best years, but it's clear that collectively in terms of results and performance, Nice are going in the right direction and that is what matters most."

Dante was at his brilliant best on Saturday evening shutting out Neymar and Lionel Messi as Nice overcame runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain 1-0.
