Arkadiusz Milik is one of a few players who could rotate back into Olympique de Marseille and Ligue 1 Ube Eats runners-up in waiting take on Olympique Lyonnais at the Orange Vélodrome on Sunday.

Jorge Sampaoli has rotated his squad with aplomb this season, with some 22 players getting meaningful minutes to help propel les Phocéens up to second in the table behind recently crowned champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine tactician's hand is somewhat forced for the second Olympico of the season, though, with UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final fixtures against Feyenoord to contend with either side of Sunday's meeting.

Delicately poised

OM were edged in Thursday's first leg against the Dutch side, although the tie is far from over with the score at 3-2. Cédric Bakambu assisted Bamba Dieng for Marseille's first goal in Rotterdam, but he went off at half-time having only recently overcome a knee injury.

Milik could rotate into the starting line-up, while Sead Kolasinac may line up at left-back with Luan Peres tucking inside to give Duje Caleta-Car a rest. Leonardo Balerdi and Konrad De La Fuente remain sidelined with shoulder and knee injuries respectively.

"Yes, because it was a very hard-fought, committed match, and we're playing a very important match against Lyon again on Sunday," Sampaoli answered when asked if he would rotate his team.

"We also have revenge to pursue against Feyenoord. I'm convinced there was a lot of physical tiredness for both teams given how intense the game was."

Marseille also have revenge to pursue against Lyon. Les Gones won February's reverse fixture 2-1, with Xherdan Shaqiri - now of Chicago Fire - and Moussa Dembélé scoring to cancel out Mattéo Guendouzi's first-half opener.

Ups and downs

Lyon have been rather boom and bust since. They begin the day in eighth, five points away from OGC Nice who occupy the fifth and final European place domestically and 13 worse off than Marseille, while they have won only two of their last five games in all competitions.

Those victories have been significant ones, however. Girondins de Bordeaux were thrashed 6-1 two weeks ago, and Lyon followed that up by dismissing Montpellier Hérault SC 5-2 last Saturday. Sampaoli's opposite number Peter Bosz is far from giving up on the season.

"There are still four matches," he said. "We believe in it. Everything's still possible. We know it'll be tough, but Marseille played on Thursday, maybe that's a small advantage for us. The score's only 3-2 because Marseille are very dangerous, especially with Dimitri Payet between the lines."

"Mathematically, as long as it is possible, we'll believe until the end," concurred goalkeepers Anthony Lopes. "It's not in our nature to lets our heads go down so we'll fight for victory at the Vélodrome. There will be a great atmosphere and it's up to us to win."

Lopes injured

Lopes won't be among the starting XI however. The usual No.1 has a back injury, so Julian Pollersbeck is set to continue in his stead. Midfielders Maxence Caqueret and Tanguy Ndombélé have knee and thigh injuries respectively so the recent move to a 4-3-3 with Thiago Mendes as the only defensive midfielder will likely hold.

Defenders Léo Dubois (groin), Jason Denayer (knock) and Sinaly Diomandé (ankle) are also doubtful, so Lyon will have to pull off what would be an upset victory with something of a patchwork team.

Possible teams

Marseille: Mandanda; Rongier, Saliba, Peres, Kolasinac; Guendouzi, Kamara, Gerson; Under, Milik, Payet

Lyon: Pollersbeck; Gusto, Da Silva, Lukeba, Henrique; Paqueta, Mendes, Aouar; Tetê, Dembélé, Toko-Ekambi
