Bordeaux's goalless draw at home to Lorient on Saturday night all-but sealed their relegation from Ligue 1 Uber Eats and coach David Guion admits his side deserve to be heading for the drop.

Les Girondins sit bottom of the table with 28 points, ahead of a final day trip to Brest.

It's looking unlikely that Bordeaux will even muster up an 18th place finish and a second bite at the cherry with the promotion/relegation play-off, due to a highly-inferior goal difference.

With Bordeaux hanging onto their top flight status by a thread, coach David Guion did not look for excuses in his assessment of the club's pitiful situation.

No excuses

"It was a difficult match to understand because of the context," said Guion, who only took over the reins at the Matmut Atlantique in February.

"The first half was difficult, we were technically poor. The second half was better, the team played with more freedom and created some good opportunities.

"Unfortunately, we were not effective enough in front of goal to find a way through that would have given us some hope.

"It's a failure, it's a sad evening, a very difficult season. Obviously, we immediately think of the fans and everyone who loves this club.

Deserved

"The season has been so bad and I think we deserve what happens to us. In time, we will analyse the season, which from the start, has been poor for us.

"The more the season went on, the more problems there were and the more difficult all these failures were to overcome. We deserve criticism. I put myself at the front of that criticism. I came here to keep this club in the league and I did not succeed.

"I had 13 matches, two and a half months, I couldn't do it"

Bordeaux president Gérard Lopez was understandably disappointed by the club's impending descent to the second tier adding: "I'm going to take the night to digest all this. We are probably going to Ligue 2. I understand the anger of the supporters. We will respond to it, take stock and find solutions to return to the top flight as quickly as possible. I will continue to put all my energy into saving the club."
