AS Monaco have pulled alongside Sunday's opponents Olympique de Marseille at the business end of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats table in recent weeks, and Aleksandr Golovin is a large part of the reason why.

Monaco and Marseille have been on opposite trajectories of late, with the principality side winning three of their last five league games whilst OM have dropped 11 of a possible 15 points having previously been champions Paris Saint-Germain's closest pursuers this season.

Monaco have climbed up to fifth as a result, one place behind Marseille by virtue of goal-difference alone. The goals are beginning to pour in from everywhere for Philippe Clement's side, though.

Golovin goal glut

Golovin and Breel Embolo scored in each of the last two domestic wins - a 2-0 victory over Angers SCO before they took all three points with the same scoreline at Toulouse FC last Sunday - while Kevin Volland hit a hat-trick as Monaco beat Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Europa League last Thursday, thus punching their ticket into the last 16.

But it is Russia star Golvin whom Clement has been most impressed with.

"We spoke with him eight months ago when I first arrived at the club," said the Belgian tactician. "He'd already been here for three or four years but was often injured. I saw a player in training who was technically strong but with room for improvement, physically.

"We told him that with the help of the performance staff he could become a great player. Thanks to that he's putting together a run of game, and is more explosive and solid. He took matters into his own hands to become the player he is now."

Bad for Benoît

Youssouf Fofana was called up to Didier Deschamps' France squad for the FIFA World Cup this week, but Benoît Badiashile - capped at the same time as him last month - missed out. The centre-back returns from suspension this weekend and should feature, with Myron Boadu (knee) the only first-team injury concern at the Stade Louis II.

Despite Marseille's recent wobbles they got a big result last time out, beating Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 at the Orange Vélodrome last Sunday thanks to Samuel Gigot's goal at the end of the first half.

Jordan Veretout assisted that goal and, like Fofana, has been called up for France, as has his fellow Marseille midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi. There is no space on the plane for right-back Jonathan Clauss, however, and Clement's opposite number Igor Tudor has been quick to try and gee the former RC Lens man up.

"Of course it's something great to play in a World Cup," said Tudor, who came third with Croatia at France '98, which the hosts won. "It's special to represent your country and I'm very happy for Mattéo and Jordan.

Tudor: 'prove the coach wrong'

"But I share Clauss' disappointment. He made a great start to the season and deserved to be called up, but we must also respect Deschamps' choices. I spoke with Clauss, telling him that it's a challenge to prove the coach wrong, that he can do even better. You never know in life what can end up being a positive.

That Clauss will line up on the same flank as Golovin is a mouth-watering prospect. On the opposite wing, Nuno Tavares is one booking away from a suspension but expected to get the nod, but centre-back Eric Bailly - on loan from Manchester United - is still struggling with a leg injury.
