Neymar Jr. is playing his best ever football at Paris Saint-Germain according to Christophe Galtier. Does that mean the Brazilian will start against AJ Auxerre on Sunday?

PSG welcome promoted Auxerre to the Parc des Princes on Sunday for their final game before the pause in Ligue 1 Uber Eats action for the FIFA World Cup later this month, and Galtier thinks the upcoming tournament is playing on some of his players' minds.

Paris beat FC Lorient 2-1 at the Stade du Mustoir on Sunday, but it took a Danilo Pereira goal nine minutes from time to get them over the line against les Merlus, and the coach was less than impressed with his players, Neymar aside.

Galtier: 'best Neymar we've ever seen'

"Neymar plays for the team," Galtier said of the Brazilian, who scored the opener against Lorient - his league-leading 11th of the campaign. "He is perhaps the best Neymar we have ever seen at PSG.

"Others played within themselves. It's automatic when you hear about other players getting injured before the World Cup. There's always news that sows doubt. For some I saw a bit of restraint, a bit of fear in challenges, but we got away with it with a set piece. It's ok."

With the World Cup set to kick off just a week after the Auxerre game, and players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi talismans for their countries, some rotation can be expected against Auxerre. The first two could come off early in the event of a lead, but Messi is a doubt with an Achilles tendon injury.

Carlos Soler could get the nod at No.10 in place of the Argentina captain while Fabian Ruiz's groin injury could present an opportunity for Renato Sanches slightly deeper in midfield, but don't expect Galtier to bow too much to the winter World Cup.

History on their side?

Auxerre have only lost one of their last five encounters with PSG, although their last meeting - a 1-1 draw at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps - came back in April 2012, just a year into the Qatari-backed era in Paris.

The 1996 French champions spent the following 10 seasons in Ligue 2 BKT but finally returned to the top-flight last term after coming up through the play-offs.

Jean-Marc Furlan was sacked last month after a run of eight Ligue 1 Uber Eats games without victory, but Auxerre are undefeated since Christophe Pélissier succeeded him, beating AC Ajaccio 1-0 before last Friday's 1-1 draw at ESTAC Troyes.

PSG, rotated or not, aren't exactly the ideal team to try and stretch that run to three against, but Pélissier remains upbeat.

Pélissier: 'good things can happen'

"It kind of tastes like a win," he said after the Troyes game. "We equalised in the last five minutes with young lads who don't give up. It's very interesting for the future. It's good to take four points in two matches. We know it'll be a long road, but when you have a good mindset, good things can happen."

Auxerre are without Youssouf M'Changama (calf strain), Kays Ruiz-Atil (knock) and Théo Pellenard (torn LCL) but they do at least welcome back striker M'Baye Niang from suspension for the trip to the capital.

Possible teams

PSG: Donnarumma; Mukiele, Marquinhos, Ramos; Hakimi, Sanches, Verratti, Bernat; Soler; Mbappé, Neymar

Auxerre: Costil; Raveloson, Jubal, Jeanvier, Mensah; Sinayoko, Touré, Sakhi, Hein; Niang, Da Costa
