Following the sacking of Romain Pitau Tuesday night, Montpellier Hérault SC have announced the appointment of Michel Der Zakarian as head coach. The technician thus makes his return to a club that he led for four seasons, from 2017 to 2021.

Michel Der Zakarian is taking the reins of Montpellier Hérault SC once more. The 59-year-old coach was appointed to the position of head coach of the first team on Wednesday, just a season and a half after his departure from the southwestern club.

'In-depth knowledge of the club as a whole'

In the top job at MHSC for the four seasons from 2017 to 2021, Zakarian's return sees him succeed Romain Pitau, who was dismissed from his duties on Tuesday night, in the wake of the defeat in Strasbourg (2-0) last Sunday.

"Today, the context is different, with a new dynamic to generate and top-flight survival to secure, but the new coach was identified by the Montpellier directors as the man most likely to get the machine ticking over again," read a statement on the club's official website. "For his skills first of all, but also for his experience, as well as for his in-depth knowledge of the club as a whole."

A first match against... Brest

Let go by Stade Brestois 29 on October 11, the former Clermont Foot, FC Nantes and Stade de Reims coach will be accompanied by one of his former assistants - David Bechkoura. Coincidentally, it is against SB29 that Der Zakarian will resume his history with Montpellier and helm his 162nd match with the club.

"The mission is very clear: to keep the club in Ligue 1," he said when putting pen to paper. "We're going to work hard and we're going to boost everyone."

On a two-game losing streak, MHSC are currently 15th  on the Ligue 1 Uber Eats table, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
