Kylian Mbappé scored two and assisted another as France beat the Netherlands 4-0 in the Paris Saint-Germain star's first game since being named captain of les Bleus.

Mbappé was named as captain following the international retirement of Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and led the team out for the first time in UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying against the Dutch at the Stade de France on Friday.

He assisted Antoine Griezmann for the opener before grabbing a pair of goals for himself after Dayot Upamecano had made it 2-0, becoming France's fifth-top scorer of all time in the process, with 38 strikes since his 2017 debut.

But the forward - who also leads the Ligue 1 Uber Eats scoring charts with 19 goals for PSG this season - was quick to praise his teammates after France's opening Group B victory.

"Mike [Maignan] starts with a clean sheet, it's great for him. I hope it'll give him a lot of confidence because we're all behind him," he said of the AC Milan shot-stopper, who saved a late Memphis Depay penalty.

"We prepared all week with the idea that we couldn't disappoint our fans. It's the first time we played here again after the World Cup so we really wanted to be in line with what we did there, except for the final [which France lost to Lionel Messi's Argentina on penalties despite Mbappé's hat-trick]."

Griezmann had also been tipped to be named captain in the post-Lloris era, and there reports that Didier Deschamps' decision had caused a rift. The head coach shot that down after the game, though.

"Fortunately, I don't follow what's written and said," he told reporters. "The two get along well, they work well and they have the same objective of seeing the French team perform well.

"Antoine's disappointment lasted two minutes. There's not the slightest problem, like within the whole group. Everyone gave off positive vibes. Is it a symbol? It's a very good thing. They can be assist and score and that gives us more options."
