A season with 18 clubs

The 2023-24 season marks the transition to 18 clubs, with the relegation of four clubs last season (AJA, ACA, ESTAC and SCO) while only two clubs were promoted (HAC and FCM). The main consequence is a reduction in the number of rounds in the season, from 38 to 34, with a total of 306 matches on the schedule. The scheduling of matches has also changed, with the Sunday 15:00 multiplex (three matches in 2022-23) now consisting of three matches.

European places

With the new Champions League format planned for 2024-25, France has three qualifying places for the group stage, thanks to its 5th place in the UEFA rankings. As a result, the podium finishers in Ligue 1 Uber Eats in 2023-24 will automatically qualify, and the fourth-placed team will have a ticket for the qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, before a possible play-off round.

Next, the fifth-placed team in Ligue 1 Uber Eats (23-24) will qualify for the Europa League group stage (as will the winner of the Coupe de France), a competition whose format is also changing.

Lastly, the sixth European place available in Ligue 1 Uber Eats will qualify for the Conference League play-offs in 2024-25.

Relegations

After four direct relegations last season, there will only be two teams relegated directly at the end of the season - the 17th and 18th teams in the table. The Ligue 1 Uber Eats play-offs are back, with a two-legged tie scheduled for Thursday 30 May and Sunday 2 June, pitting the 16th-placed Uber Eats against Ligue 2 BKT play-off winners (third, fourth and fifth in the standings).

Coaches and staff

On the pitch, with the summer transfer window open until Friday 1 September, clubs have made changes to their coaching staffs with the arrivals of Luis Enrique at PSG, Marcelino at OM, Patrick Vieira at Strasbourg, Adi Hütter at Monaco, Francesco Farioli at Nice and Carles Martinez Novell at Toulouse.

The five-change rule

As in recent seasons, the 18 teams will be able to make up to 5 substitutions per match.

Additional substitution for concussion

Introduced in 2021, the concussion protocol will be applied this season.

Shirt numbering

New from last season: Ligue 1 Uber Eats players still have the option of wearing a shirt number from 1 to 99. The rules in detail.

The trophy: Hexagoal (pictured)

The official trophy awarded to the Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions - Hexagoal - has existed since the 2006-07 season. It will therefore be awarded for the 17th consecutive season at the end of Round 34. Seven clubs have won it so far, including Paris Saint-Germain, a staggering eight times.
