After picking up an ankle injury on France's 14-0 demolition of Gibraltar, France's youngest debutant - and scorer - in over 100 years, Warren Zaïre-Emery of Paris Saint-Germain, will be out of action for the rest of 2023.

A memorable night ended up turning somewhat sour for Warren Zaïre-Emery, the Paris Saint-Germain prodigy making his France debut - the youngest to do so in over 100 years! - before scoring his maiden goal en bleu and then... being forced off injured after taking a knock to the ankle as he swept home his strike.

"His ankle swelled up enormously. He went for emergency tests, which ruled out a possible fracture, which is good news, even if the injury is serious. It could have been more serious, because when there's a fracture, it's for months," said France boss Didier Deschamps after the match, before giving an update upon Zaïre-Emery's severe ankle sprain on television show Téléfoot on Sunday. "It's still a significant injury that will certainly take several weeks [to heal]. You never want to lose players in matches like this. It could have been more serious."

Zaïre-Emery will undergo further tests on Monday, at which time a more precise prognosis can be expected - but for now, 'several weeks' most likely means that the 17-year-old won't be back in action for PSG before Ligue 1 Uber Eats breaks for Christmas.

Mbappé: 'Impressive'

But what of the real story here - that Warren Zaïre-Emery became France's youngest debutant and goalscorer in over 100 years, continuing his rise to generational talent status?

"He's ready," said an avuncular Kylian Mbappé in his post-match interview on Saturday. "Playing in your first match like that, undaunted, playing your game... I know what it's like to start young, it's not easy to do what he's doing. You have to recognise how impressive that is."

Les Bleus now turn their attentions to Tuesday's final Euro 2024 qualifier, against Greece in Athens, after which Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain clubmates Ousmane Dembélé and Randal Kolo Muani will get set for their massive Ligue 1 Uber Eats clash at home to third-placed Monaco on Friday night.
