Olympique de Marseille have signed one of the most promising young wingers in world football in Konrad de la Fuente. Ligue1.com takes a closer look at the Barcelona academy graduate recently capped for the USA…

From Chris Waddle and Franck Ribery through to Florian Thauvin and Dimitri Payet, Marseille have a rich history of wingers who have had the skill and trickery to rip fans from their Orange Vélodrome seats.

The early signs are good that Konrad de la Fuente will be another, but what else is there to know about the 20-year-old wide man?

Back story:

Born in Miami, Florida to Haitian parents of Dominican descent in July 2001, de la Fuente moved to Barcelona at the age of 10 after his father Conrad took a job with the Haitian consulate in the city. Two short years later and the younger Konrad made his way to Barca's renowned La Masia youth academy, where he was an age group teammate of fellow winger Ansu Fati.

Despite his goal involvement of one every 164 minutes in his two full seasons with Barcelona B, de la Fuente struggled to break into Barca's first team. UEFA Champions League outings against Dynamo Kyiv and Ferencvaros last season were testament to the club's faith in his talent, but having a certain Lionel Messi occupying his favourite position didn't help.

Internationally, the USA moved quickly to cap de la Fuente, giving him his USMNT bow against Wales last November and thus staving off a four-way battle for his allegiance, and now he has the chance to fulfil his potential at club level with a Marseille side looking to improve upon their fifth-place finish last season.

Style of play:

De la Fuente is a right-footed winger with sharp control, incredibly quick feet and an electric turn of pace. He can line up on the left or right in the final third, with his style similar on either flank. He likes to drop deep and get involved in the build-up play, and his 5'9" frame helps him shield the ball from markers who might follow him. Once past his man - with a give and go or skilful dribble - de la Fuente will assist from the right or cut inside and shoot from the left. If he can work on his weaker left foot, being able to make and take from both sides, Marseille would have a serious attacking proposition on their hands.

Current campaign:

De la Fuente's Marseille career is young, but he has already given OM fans a glimpse of his talent. The first American to pull on a Barcelona jersey, he collected the same record for his new employers against AS Saint-Étienne at the end of July, and marked his debut with a stunning turn and finish the open the scoring in a 2-1 win.

What they said:

"He has the pace and power to unbalance a defender when on the wing in a one-on-one. He takes advantage of these situations to assist with crosses or look for conclusive actions. These are the characteristics which fit into the elite profile Barcelona's trying to find, and I think he has the potential to show the level required in the first team."

- de la Fuente's academy coach Marcel on his early progress.

"I want to grow more here, and play for the national team for the World Cup in Qatar. And for that we have to have a good season. There's no risk to come to Ligue 1. I knew OM were a great club, with a great team. I was already watching Ligue 1 football regularly and I knew it was going to be good for me."
