Olympique Lyonnais have boosted their European hopes with the loan acquisition of Brazilian winger Tetê from Shakhtar Donetsk, but what else if there to know?

There can be very few positives to draw from the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, but with FIFA ruling that Ukraine-based players could sign with other clubs until 30 June, Tetê's was perhaps the headline signature of players who became newly available.

A left-footed winger who prefers to line up on the right, Tetê has the ability to strike fear into opposition full-backs. Lyon are in 10th, meanwhile, with 10 points to make up on the UEFA Champions League places and only nine games left to do it. Can Tetê bring the heat?

Back story:

Born Mateus Cardoso Lemos Martins the day after Valentine's Day in February 2000, Tetê was soon making the short journey from hometown Alvorada into Porto Alegre proper, joining first love Grêmio's youth set up at the age of eight.

Despite racking up the goals in the Tricolor's age group teams - and some 33 strikes for the club's reserves in 2016 - Tetê never got to make his first-team debut with Grêmio, instead swapping the Rio Grande do Sul for Ukraine in 2019, joining the significant Brazilian contingent at Shakhtar just days after his 19th birthday.

Tetê had a star-turn in October 2020 when he scored one and assisted another in a shock 3-2 victory for Shakhtar over Real Madrid in the Champions League group stages, but his most prolific season to date has been the current one, where his nine goals and one assist in the Ukrainian Premier League have come in at a rate of one every 97 minutes.

Style of play:

Fleet of foot with a speed of control which is just as quick, if not quicker, Tetê rapidly drew comparisons with Brazil international winger Everton when the pair were still at Grêmio. Less two-footed than his 25-time capped compatriot, Tetê can nonetheless do more with his left foot than many players could dream of.

His habit of nutmegging markers at close quarters before continuing a run is a joy to behold, and the fact Tetê boasted the highest goals per 90-minute ratio league-wide in Ukraine tells you that the 22-year-old oozes just as much substance as style. OL fans are in for a treat.

Current campaign:

Although he was one of the first names on Roberto De Zerbi's teamsheet, Tetê - whose name means heat in French - took a while to warm up this season, not opening his domestic account until two months into the campaign when the Miners thrashed Mariupol 5-0. A few weeks later he bagged a brace against Shakhtar's Donbas rivals Zorya Luhansk in a 6-1 win, and he never stopped scoring until the Russo-Ukrainian trouble.

Lyon face fellow European aspirants RC Strasbourg Alsace and Montpellier Hérault SC on their season run-in, and also have a UEFA Europa League quarter-final against West Ham United. Tetê hasn't played since December but has been keeping fit in Poland, and OL coach Peter Bosz is delighted to have him on board.

What they said:

"Tetê's a special player. I've known about him for a long time, and I was surprised a player like him became available to OL. Normally he'd be unattainable. The sad situation in Ukraine helped us but we know that time is short. He just had his first training session with us, and we only have six weeks left of the season. For me, his best position is on the right wing. He doesn't encroach on Romain Faivre or Rayan Cherki, who are more central players."

- Bosz on Tetê's signing.

"I'm very proud to have been able to join OL, which is a great team in France and in Europe. I'm sure I can help the team. Everybody knows that the Ukrainian situation is complicated. Without a doubt, the presence of several Brazilians convinced me to come here. I know that the club has a special story with Brazil. I had the chance to speak with Lucas Paqueta who said nothing but good things about the club. I'm a dribbling and finishing player. I like to play on the right side to bring my speed in order to be decisive."
