Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé was over the moon after bagging a goal and an assist as the capital club beat Monaco 2-0 to claim a record 14th Coupe de France title at the Stade de France on Wednesday night.

With Monaco having beaten Paris Saint-Germain home and away in the league this season, the stage was set for a massive showdown in the Coupe de France final on Wednesday, but the holders - even with out the suspended Neymar - never looked in danger as they shut their opponents out for the record win.

Rock-solid at the back, Paris were also razor-sharp up front, with Mbappé pouncing on a poor touch from Axel Disasi to race into the box and square the ball for Mauro Icardi to tap into an open goal on 19 minutes.

Man of the Match

Although Monaco went close to levelling it up when substitute Gelson Martins looped a shot onto Keylor Navas's cross-bar, Mbappé wasn't to be outdone. The 22-year-old also hit the woodwork - with an audacious lob from 35 metres - and then got his goal when he raced onto Angel Di Maria's defence-splitting pass to chip coolly over Radoslaw Majecki and seal the 2-0 victory nine minutes from time.

"It wasn't easy," said the Man of the Match after Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos lifted the club's sixth Coupe de France in seven seasons. "They're a tough side to play against but we managed to win. We're very happy and the trophy is important. That's for all the fans. We're Coupe de France winners!"

Kovac: 'Mbappé the best in the world'

Monaco coach Niko Kovac, while noting that inexperience in his young squad led to some timidity in the early stages, was full of praise for Monaco youth academy product Mbappé.

"For me, at the moment, he is the best player in the world. The first goal, we know it sprang from a big mistake, but that happens. It wasn't only because Axel is young; experienced players can do that too," said the man who has worked wonders at the principality club and whose side are still mathematically in the running to claim the Ligue 1 Uber Eats title on Sunday. "But the second goal was fantastic. Mbappé turned in a fantastic performance - that's why all the clubs are fighting to sign him. We had him, now we don't."

Pochettino: 'Trust that we can do our job'

Meanwhile PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino - doubtless thrilled to have own the first major trophy of his managerial career - was already focusing on Sunday's final-round clash away to Brest, where victory will be imperative for PSG to maintain hopes of retaining their league title.

"Winning finals is always the most important thing at a club like Paris Saint-Germain. I'm so happy for the fans, for the players and for all the staff at the club to add another trophy is always important," said the Argentine. "It's the best way to prepare for Sunday's game. Of course we need to be professional and win the game against Brest and wait and see if Lille don't beat Angers. We need to believe that it's possible. Of course it's going to be difficult because Lille are a very good team but we need to trust that we can do our job and then wait for the result that could give us the title."

Di Maria breaks PSG assist record

The win was also notable in that it was Angel Di Maria set a new club record for assists, topping the 103-assist mark set by Safet Susic in the 80s.

"I'm very happy, delighted," said the silky-skilled Di Maria. "My 104th assist? Beating the record and entering into the club's history, it's very important. It was an important target for me, scoring goals and also getting assists in important games like this one. So thank you to my teammates for that."
