Paris Saint-Germain have the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal tie against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, but it's not the first time that the capital club encounter a German side at this stage of the tournament.

In 2020, Ligue 1 had two teams vying for a spot in the Champions League final. One matchup featured the Parisians facing RB Leipzig in the semifinals, with the lone match taking place in Portugal.

PSG had qualified for this round thanks to a dramatic quarterfinal win over Atalanta while Leipzig had an upset victory over Atlético Madrid. The Bundesliga squad was on a magical run, and PSG was 90 minutes away from the club's first Champions League final.

Thomas Tuchel and his team would come out on top with a convincing 3-0 win. PSG opened the scoring thanks to a goal from Marquinhos in the 13th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The capital club would carry positive momentum into the dressing room courtesy of an Ángel Di María goal.

Even though the Parisians had a 2-0 advantage, Juan Bernat added a third goal for further insurance. The attack did its part to register three goals, and the defense also kept Leipizig's attack, which featured Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku, quiet. With the win over Leipzig, PSG was heading off to a final.

The Ligue 1 side fell 1-0 to Bayern Munich, with Kingsley Coman providing the lone goal in the match to deny his former club of winning the Champions League. Fast-forward four years, and PSG are again in the same situation.

A German team stands in PSG's way of a final appearance, with Bayern Munich having an opportunity to be the French side's opponent at Wembley Stadium. Luis Enrique and his team have advanced past Real Sociedad and FC Barcelona and will now attempt to do the same against Dortmund.

Marquinhos and Kylian Mbappé are still part of the squad from that 2020 run and now have an opportunity again to contribute to PSG's quest for their first Champions League title.

If successful, they would become only the second French team to win the prestigious trophy, following in the footsteps of their Ligue 1 rivals, Olympique de Marseille.
