Substitute Islam Slimani cancelled out Irvin Cardona's opener as Olympique Lyonnais drew 1-1 with Brest at Groupama Stadium.

THE MATCH

Both clubs embarked on the campaign under new coaches. Lyon boss Peter Bosz named three teenagers in his starting eleven, while Michel Der Zakarian hoped a four-man defence would see the Brittany club find some much needed solidity.

Moussa Dembélé, back from his loan spell at Atletico Madrid, started at centre-forward for OL and he fired narrowly over with the first big chance (31'). The visitors, however, took the lead thanks to Cardona, who collected the ball just inside the OL half, strode forward and then fired in an unstoppable right-footed shot from just outside the area that flew past Anthony Lopes (43').

Rayan Cherki created a chance for Maxence Caqueret (45+2') but OL turned around behind. Brest could have doubled their lead at the start of the second half (50') in a two-on-one counter but Franck Honorat couldn't find Romain Faivre with his cross. Marcelo (56') then made a decisive block of a Faivre shot before Lopes made a spectacular save from new Brest captain Brendan Chardonnet (57').

Bosz sent for Slimani on the hour and the Algerian international needed only two minutes on the pitch to make his mark. Fellow sub Lucas Paqueta flicked the ball to Karl Toko Ekambi and Slimani raced onto the Cameroonian's header, controlling well before slamming the ball home (62').

Both sides came close to a winner. Lopes (81') made a flying save from Steve Mounié's header and at the other end Dutch debutant Marco Bizot came up big (90') to save with his feet from Houssem Aouar.

THE PLAYER: Islam Slimani

With former captain Memphis Depay having left for Barcelona at the end of his contract, OL need to replace the Dutchman's goals. Bosz looked to Dembélé to fill the void left by Depay, yet it was the 33-year-old Slimani who served notice of his enduring qualities, ensuring Lyon netted for the 19th consecutive Ligue 1 Uber Eats match.

THE STAT: 100

This was Lyon's 100th Ligue 1 Uber Eats match at Groupama Stadium. Their record reads 60 wins, 20 draws and 20 defeats.
