Stade Rennais clinched victory on penalty kicks after they battled Olympique de Marseille to a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes on Sunday night at Roazhon Park.

The match got off to a difficult start as manager Gennaro Gattuso had to make two substitutions as Amir Murillo and Bilal Nadir left the game early in the first half. Nonetheless, Marseille took the early 1-0 lead in the contest, with Jordan Veretout scoring in the 29th minute.

Rennes had a chance to tie the matchup after being awarded a penalty kick late in the first half. However, Pau López would stop the shot from Benjamin Bourigeaud to allow OM to keep their lead heading into halftime.

Les Rouge et Noirs redeemed themselves early in the second half as Martin Terrier leveled the score, making it 1-1 in the 53rd minute. Neither squad could score the go-ahead goal, and so the contest went to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

Both squads would convert eight straight penalties to open the shootout. A miss didn't occur until the ninth round of the shootout when Samuel Gigot failed to convert.

The Gigot miss allowed Rennes to seize the opportunity, and Mahamadou Nagida successfully converted, securing the victory for the Brittany side. Rennes will now face FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in the Coupe de France Round of 16.
