Olympique de Marseille progressed to the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 following their 3-1 victory (5-3 on aggregate) against FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
This win comes as a boost for Ligue 1 after RC Lens, Stade Rennais, and Toulouse FC were ousted in the knockout play-off round, injecting some much-needed positivity courtesy of OM.
The contest didn't start well for Jean-Louis Gasset and his team, as they conceded the opening goal to Shakhtar in the 12th minute on a penalty kick. Marseille did respond to the adversity in the match, leveling the score 1-1 on a goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Marseille and Shakhtar played a tightly contested match after the two goals early in the first half. Eventually, OM broke through in the 74th minute, with Ismaïla Sarr giving the squad a 2-1 lead.
Less than ten minutes later, Geoffrey Kondogbia added the insurance goal in the 84th minute to punch the Ligue 1 side's ticket to the next round. The result also allows Marseille to begin Gasset's tenure on a positive note.
