Edinson Cavani scored four times in the first half as Paris Saint-Germain blew away SM Caen 6-0 on Friday to return to winning ways in spectacular style.

After three competitive outings without victory, two of which in Ligue 1, Unai Emery's men were in need of a win. They got one. And how.

Cavani had borne the brunt of the criticism for missing opportunities in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League draw with Arsenal. There could be no reproach made towards the Uruguay international forward in Normandy as he proved utterly ruthless.

He did pass up one early chance - failing to connect sufficiently cleanly with an Angel Di Maria cross on four minutes - but very quickly made amends. Di Maria was involved again, sending Maxwell away down the left - the Brazilian full-back's cross was missed by Lucas but not Cavani, who sent a shot off a post and into the net (12').

When Syam Ben Youssef fouled Lucas ten minutes later, Cavani sent his spot-kick beyond Rémy Vercoutre to double the visitors' advantage. In the space of 60 seconds, Lucas (30') and Di Maria (31') might have made it three before Cavani did, completing his hat-trick on 38 minutes.

Di Maria and Maxwell teamed up again, and it was the latter's low cross that was turned in expertly by Cavani, who had scored just once in his three league appearances before kick-off.

Deja vu

Not yet sated, Cavani even scored again in a dream first half for the former SSC Napoli forward. Adrien Rabiot won back possession, Lucas and Thomas Meunier combined down the right, the latter crossed, Cavani scored. For Caen, it was a worrying case of deja vu, all over again.

Whether out of pragmatism in being able to rest Cavani with his work done or out of mercy for Caen, Emery withdrew the striker at the break, replacing him with Jesé Rodriguez.

The summer arrival from Real Madrid did not find the net, but PSG did make Caen's evening still worse. Jean-Kévin Augustin, a 60th-minute replacement for Di Maria, and Lucas exchanged passes, allowing the Brazilian to unleash a fierce drive from the edge of the box that Vercoutre could not keep out (67').

Jesé struck a post (69') before Alphonse Aréola, making his second successive start, made his only serious save of the game, pushing out Ivan Santini's point-blank header (75'), before Augustin finished off approach play from Rabiot and Maxwell with number six (79').
