Kylian Mbappé could be rested or start on the bench as Paris Saint-Germain have one eye on their UEFA Champions League destiny ahead of Saturday's Ligue 1 Uber Eats trip to Montpellier.

Mbappé played a central role as PSG defeated Manchester United 3-1 on Wednesday to move to within touching distance of the Champions League Last 16. The French title-holders still require a point at home to Basaksehir on Tuesday to be certain of reaching the knockout stages, however, and that has coach Thomas Tuchel in two minds.

His side are just two points clear of the chasing pack at the top of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats table, and a third top-flight match without a win could see them lose pole position leaving Tuchel to decide if or when Mbappé, who has surprisingly failed to score in the Champions League in 2020, will feature at the Stade de la Mosson et du Mondial 98.

"In my head, there are several possibilities," he explained. "We have to take decisions for Tuesday. For Kylian, I'm very calm [about his European goal drought]. He played well [against United], he played better even than we he scores sometimes, he had a lot of impact, he made a lot of sprints to attack and defence. If he continues like that, the goals will come. I'm happy with his performance. We're going to create chances for him. He can be very calm. I am."

The former Borussia Dortmund coach added: "We have a big game, very important, to play on Tuesday. To do that, we'll have to find solutions, make changes that will make it possible for us to push that team. We have a very difficult game to play at Montpellier. It's always tough there, but we have to accept that we have a decisive game on Tuesday. We'll have to make choices for the game against Montpellier.

"We're in between two very important matches for us, the team and the club, against Manchester United and Istanbul Basaksehir. We'll have to play calmly and build in the same way as we did in Manchester. We respect Montpellier. They're a team that plays with emotion, solid physically, and who make a lot of crosses. We'll have to be solid. We have to prepare for that."
