Kylian Mbappé turned 23 this week but the World Cup-winning striker will not be able to celebrate with a goal against FC Lorient on Wednesday. He misses Paris Saint-Germain’s last outing of the calendar year due to suspension.

>> LIVE SCORING, STATS AND COMMENTARY

Mbappé picked up a one game ban after being booked three times across PSG’s last 10 Ligue 1 Uber Eats encounters and so he was already on his holiday as he celebrated his birthday on Monday. It is remarkable to think what the boy from Bondy has already achieved in his career at still such a young age, so here is a quick recap of some of his standout moments.

A World Cup winner at 19, Mbappé will head into 2022 with the aim of lifting that trophy again when France head to Qatar at the end of the year. He has already been a Ligue 1 champion four times and has been the top scorer in the division in each of the last three seasons. France’s player of the year for last season has also scored more Ligue 1 goals than anyone else currently playing in the top flight and he took his tally to 15 in all competitions for this campaign with a brace in Sunday’s 3-0 victory away at fifth-tier Feignies-Aulnoye in the Coupe de France.

As well as Mbappé, PSG will be missing the suspended Marco Verratti in Lorient, while Neymar Jr. is still sidelined and both Juan Bernat and Julian Draxler are ruled out. Lionel Messi will therefore take centre stage as he looks to improve on his record of just one goal in 10 league appearances so far in a Paris shirt.

While performances have not always lived up to expectations, there is little wrong with PSG’s record in the first half of the season. They have already secured the symbolic title of autumn champions before heading to the Stade du Moustoir, sitting a huge 13 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table from Olympique de Marseille, albeit having played one game more. They are through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and will face fourth-tier Vannes in the last 32 of the Coupe de France the other side of a brief winter break.

Lorient on dire run

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have suffered just one defeat in their last 14 games in all competitions, and that was away at Manchester City. It would be a huge surprise if they slipped up on their trip to Brittany, especially because their opponents are in the midst of a dreadful run of form.

Lorient were knocked out of the Coupe de France at the first hurdle on Saturday, losing 1-0 away to regional rivals Stade Rennais FC in a performance that showcased their lack of cutting edge, even if they were largely solid at the back. However, Christope Pélissier’s side have now suffered eight consecutive defeats in all competitions, scoring just two goals in that time. They have failed to win any of their last 12 matches since beating OGC Nice 1-0 at home on September 22.

If there is any reason for encouragement it comes from the fact that all of Lorient’s wins this season have come at home, with AS Monaco, reigning champions LOSC Lille and Nice all being beaten at Le Moustoir.

“The match against PSG will be a different game in a different context. We just need to try to play our game,” said Lorient coach Christophe Pélissier after the Cup exit. “But we know when we come up against sides like these that often they decide the outcome of the game. It is hard but that is how it is.”

Veteran duo Fabien Lemoine and Jérémy Morel will be missing due to injury for Lorient.
