By exceeding the nine million spectator mark for the first time in the 2022-23 season, Ligue 1 Uber Eats set an all-time stadium attendance record. Here's a look at the figures.

Over the 38 rounds of league matches played, 9.05 million spectators turned up at the stadiums around France in season 2022-23. This is an all-time record for French football, with total Ligue 1 Uber Eats attendance up 16% on the 2021-22 season.

Top 5 seasons for Ligue 1 Uber Eats attendances (in no. of spectators):
2022-2023: 9,047,612
2018-2019: 8,676,419
2017-2018: 8,558,928
2014-2015: 8,453,000
2006-2007: 8,290,346

These figures are clearly in line with those announced at mid-season, confirming that Ligue 1 Uber Eats is continuing to gain ground in the stands. On average, 23,810 spectators attended each match in the top flight, the highest average attendance in the history of Ligue 1 Uber Eats.

Over the course of a single round, the highest number of spectators present in the stadiums was recorded in Round 37, with a peak of 313,506.

81% of capacity: Another record

As far as the clubs are concerned, 19 of the 20 Ligue 1 Uber Eats teams in the 2022-23 season saw their average attendance rise compared with the previous season. And OM remains the club with the highest average home attendance (62,716), ahead of Paris Saint-Germain (47,418) and Olympique Lyonnais (46,701).

With eight clubs averaging over 25,000 spectators per match (OM, OL, PSG, RC Lens, LOSC, FC Nantes, Stade Rennais and RC Strasbourg Alsace), the percentage of capacity rate for Ligue 1 Uber Eats stadiums reached a record average of 81%.

In addition to the three promoted teams (AJ Auxerre +41%, AC Ajaccio +36% and Toulouse FC +33%), the biggest increases in points were achieved by FC Nantes (+21 points to 84% occupancy) and FC Lorient (+11 points to 89% occupancy).

OM-PSG: Classiques a big hit

With 65,894 spectators gathered at the Orange Vélodrome on 26 February (Ligue 1 Uber Eats Round 25), the Classique between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain match set the attendance record for the 2022-23 season. The first Classique of the season, in Paris, had already given the capital club their highest attendance of the season at the Parc des Princes (47,926 spectators).

The 2022-23 Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions helped gather season-high attendances in ten top-flight stadiums in addition to the Orange Vélodrome (Ajaccio, Angers, OL, Montpellier, Nice, Reims, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Troyes), while RC Lens (Auxerre, Lille and Rennes) and Stade Rennais (Brest, Lorient and Nantes) did so in three stadiums, OM in two (PSG and Clermont) and AS Monaco in one - the Bollaert-Delelis (38,223 spectators).

Increase in visitor numbers

Finally, the number of visitors to the Ligue 1 Uber Eats away sections also broke records last season.

In total, the Ligue 1 Uber Eats away sections welcomed 125,207 fans (during the 358 matches that welcomed at least one fan in an away section), an increase of 53% compared with the 2021-22 season, representing an average of 350 visiting fans per match (compared with 286 last season).

Several clubs have seen their average number of fans present at away matches increase by more than 100%, including Stade de Reims (+301%), Toulouse FC (+146%) and AJ Auxerre (+119%).

Between them, fans of RC Lens, Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain accounted for almost a third of the cumulative attendance at Ligue 1 Uber Eats away sections. Finally, ten clubs finished the season with an average above the overall average for the 2021-22 season.
