Lionel Messi says his two years at Paris Saint-Germain gave him the platform to win the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in December.

Messi shocked world football when he joined PSG on a free transfer from Barcelona in the summer of 2021, and after a slow start he rediscovered his best form, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 Uber Eats titles.

He joined David Beckham's Inter Miami project this summer with 32 goals and 35 assists from 75 games to his name, either side of cementing his legacy with Argentina, whom he led to triumph in Qatar.

Perfect platform

"I had two years where a lot of things happened, some good and some not so good," Messi reflected after winning his record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or. "But I've already mentioned this period several times, it's now in the past and I only remember the positive things: with the team, we won two league titles in a row.

"I made very good friends in Paris and it was by playing there that I managed to become world champion."
